Children's Homecare: Supporting Young People with Complex Needs at Home

Children's Homecare: Supporting Young People with Complex Needs at Home

When a child has a disability, a complex health need, or additional support requirements, families often assume the options are limited to what school or the NHS can provide. In fact, children's homecare — professional care delivered in the family home — is an established, valuable part of the support available, though it's less well known than adult home care.

What Is Children's Homecare?

Children's homecare involves trained, DBS-checked care workers providing support to children and young people (typically aged 0–18) in their own home, alongside the family. This can range from a few hours a week of respite support, to intensive, ongoing complex care for children with significant medical needs.

Who Is It For?

Children's homecare supports young people with a wide range of needs, including:

  • Physical disabilities
  • Learning disabilities
  • Autism spectrum conditions
  • Complex or long-term health conditions
  • Sensory impairments
  • Behaviours that challenge, requiring specialist, positive behaviour support (PBS)-informed care

Why Registration Matters More Here Than Almost Anywhere Else

Providing care to children carries additional regulatory requirements beyond adult care, and CQC registration specifically for children's services isn't automatic — providers must demonstrate they meet the additional safeguarding, training, and oversight standards required. This means the pool of genuinely qualified children's homecare providers in any given area is often much smaller than for adult domiciliary care, particularly outside major cities.

What Support Actually Looks Like

Depending on the child's needs, support might include:

  • Personal care support
  • Support with mobility, feeding, or communication aids
  • Respite care to give parents and family carers a genuine break
  • Support to access school, therapies, or social activities
  • Overnight or waking night support for families managing complex conditions
  • Complex clinical care, where appropriately trained staff are in place — including PEG feeding and tracheostomy care in some cases

The Impact on the Whole Family

It's easy to focus entirely on the child's needs and overlook the impact on parents and siblings. Consistent, reliable children's homecare doesn't just support the child — it gives parents the breathing room to work, rest, and attend to other family responsibilities, and gives siblings a fairer share of parental attention. Family carer burnout is real, and it's one of the strongest arguments for accessing support early rather than waiting until a crisis point.

How Are Referrals Made?

Referrals typically come through a local authority's Children and Families or SEND team, through NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) for children with complex medical needs, or directly from families seeking privately funded support. Eligibility and funding routes vary, so it's worth having an early conversation with a registered provider about what applies to your situation.

Getting Started

JJR Care is one of very few providers in the Braintree District registered to deliver children's homecare (0–18), working alongside families, schools, and healthcare professionals to provide genuinely person-centred support. If you're a family or a professional exploring options for a child with additional needs, we'd welcome the conversation.
